Art Safaris

An exciting "safari" concept has been originated by Guy in the "Art Safari".  This novel idea gives visitors a unique opportunity to study and interact with nature on an intimate level in some of the most beautiful and remote areas of Africa.  The Art Safari concept is unique in that the parks that are accessed allow us to walk, canoe or drive to any chosen spot and paint 'live'.  It is astounding when you sit quietly for long enough in the bush, what unfolds around you.  The flexibility of the Art Safari allows one to access a variety of exclusive camps in the Zambezi Valley extending from Mana Pools, Matusadona, Kariba, Hwange, Gonorazhou and Victoria Falls.  In addition to these land based safaris, and in conjunction with Guy's wife Kiara - a "Houseboat" Art Safari is being introduced, whereby clients can cruise Lake Kariba (one of the largest man made lakes in the world), by boat and paint the incredible landscapes, sunsets and of course abundant wildlife and bird life.  During the Art Safari (which is usually about 7 days long) Guy will tutor and is available during the entire period to advise and critique paintings.  Previous painting or drawing experience is not required as Guy and his team of artists are on hand to assist you to experience the true colours of Africa.

Art Safari - Ruckomechi, Zimbabwe (September 2005)

An inaugural Art Safari took place over the period of 11 September - 17 September 2005  The Art Safari was held at Ruckomechi Camp on the Western Side of Mana Pools.  The camp hosted 19 clients of varying artistic levels, as well as non artist partners.  The days on this safari were primarily spent observing, studying and photographing wildlife, habitats and landscapes and gathering material to be used in painting at a later date.

Guy instructed the artists on various sketching and painting techniques and how to reproduce different landscapes and wildlife observed onto canvas.  Wayne Stutchbury, a well known artist in Zimbabwe assisted with the Art Lessons.  Also in attendance was Kat Combes, the widow of Kenyan born artist Simon Combes who is an accomplished amateur photographer added variety and depth to the whole "art safari experience".

The nature of the Art Safari is such that where the keener artists are involved in art lessons throughout the safari, the schedule is flexible enough to allow clients/artists to enjoy their surroundings as well as learn to paint.  The Art Safari is designed to encompass not only all aspects of plain air painting, but is in itself a safari where clients from all walks of life are able to experience first hand the uniqueness of the African bush, its abundant wildlife, spectacular scenery and landscapes and enjoy the freedom and liberation of being surrounded by nature.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending how you look at it) Guy has been extremely tied up with other commitments, over the last 2 years (including getting married and introducing baby Campbell Hammond into the world), which has meant that the Art Safaris that were in mind had to be delayed.  However with the current "easing" of the political situation allowing more movement around the country, Guy and his wife Kiara are hoping to resume "Paint the Wild" Art Safari's in early 2009.  If you think that you would be interested in attending an Art Safari in Zimbabwe please contact us via email.  Our Art Safaris will tentatively be conducted in conjunction with one of the leading professional safari company's in Zimbabwe, Natureways Safaris.
